A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO
Welcome to the Visionary Women’s Afternoon Tea! This year, like last,
we decided to present this event as a virtual afternoon tea. We are
delighted and grateful that our friend Sharon Lawrence has agreed
to host it once again. As much as we would love to reunite with you
all in person, the health and safety of our community remains our
top priority.
The Visionary Women’s event highlights the fact that women are disproportionately
affected by Alzheimer’s at a significantly higher rate than men. Alzheimer’s is now
the third leading cause of death for older women in Los Angeles. Two-thirds of those
affected by Alzheimer’s are women — that’s 3.8 million women, including over 113,000
that live in LA County. In addition, women make up the majority of caregivers for those
living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
These are the challenging realities we must face — Alzheimer’s is truly a women’s issue.
And that’s why I am so proud to recognize two incredible women this year: Dr. Laura
Trejo and Carol Albright. It is especially touching for us to highlight the impact they’ve
had on our community during Women’s History Month, which is dedicated to reflecting
on the often-overlooked contributions of women in our society.
It is my pleasure to recognize our wonderful sponsors, Board of Directors, and donors
without whom none of the work we do would be possible. I would also like to thank
Randi Jones for her work as chair of our planning committee, and the other women on
the committee for their support and dedication to this event.
And, finally, I want to extend my most heartfelt thanks to Harold Foonberg, who has
once again stepped up to issue a matching gift challenge of $15,000. As always, every
dollar you give stays local in our community. Thanks to your support, our programs are
always free for families. We know we could not do that without you.
With gratitude,
Heather Cooper Ortner | CEO, Alzheimer’s Los Angeles
