LGBTQ Pride Month 2019
June is LGBTQ Pride Month
In honor of Pride Month, we are honoring LGBTQ Caregivers who are caring for their partner, a family member of choice, or a blood relative who has dementia. It takes a lot of patience, courage and stamina to be a caregiver, and we salute those who take on this task. Caregiving can be challenging, and many caregivers feel isolated or neglect to pay attention to their own physical, emotional and social well-being while providing care to others. The stress caused by these factors can lead to physical problems, irritability, lack of concentration and changes in appetite. Even though it’s not always easy, staying healthy and seeking support could make all the difference.
Here are just a few tips to consider when caring for someone with dementia:
- check in with your doctor: you may be less inclined to see your doctor, especially if you have experienced inadequate treatment or discrimination, however your wellbeing is just as important as the person you care for and taking care of yourself will make you a better caregiver. The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association offers referrals to LGBTQ sensitive medical providers and community centers.
- legal concerns: it’s important for you and your loved one to have legal and financial documents in place to establish wishes for care as the disease progresses. Medical and financial Powers of Attorney and hospital visitations are best filed in advance while the person is still able to make decisions.
- ask for help: don’t be afraid to reach out and ask a neighbor, sibling, or friend to help so that you can take a break and re-energize. Alzheimer’s Los Angeles offers support groups, activity programs, counseling and information and referrals to community resourses for the caregiver and the person with dementia.
