High School Seniors Give Back
Melodies of Compassion:
High School Seniors Give Back Through Music
In the beginning of their senior year of high school, Christine and Ella decided to take initiative on a topic they had become very passionate about — Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In their quest to get involved with the community and pursue their musical passion, Christine and Ella started playing piano on the weekend for seniors at Ivy Park of Woodland Hills, formerly Sunrise Senior Living of Woodland Hills.
Christine and Ella observed the joy on the residents’ faces when familiar tunes filled the air and the residents relaxed when they heard calming classical music.

“Volunteering at Ivy Park of Woodland Hills has shown me the great impact of just being there and caring for those affected,” shares Ella. “Seeing the joy and comfort I bring to others drives me to dedicate myself further to this cause.”
This experience inspired them to research and explore the science behind the incredible phenomenon of music’s impact on the mind. Their research journey, particularly into music therapy, sparked a desire to support organizations dedicated to these causes and to people who could easily be their own families.
Christine said, “I have witnessed Alzheimer’s alongside Lewy Bodies in my grandmother and have seen the intense impact it has on one’s perception of reality and our overall family’s bond.” Christine always questioned what music does inside the brain to have such an uplifting effect on people’s well-being. “I’ve observed that [the impact of music] is incredibly valuable to someone struggling with Alzheimer’s as it may guide them to a serene auditory and mental haven.”
After witnessing the importance of music to brain health, Christine and Ella decided to make an even more meaningful impact by organizing a music recital fundraiser to support Alzheimer’s Los Angeles. They gathered their fellow music students and organized a music recital night for seniors at Ivy Park of Woodland Hills. Christine and Ella asked for suggested donations in place of an entrance fee and hosted a small raffle during the recital to encourage more donations.
