Information for Communities
Los Angeles is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse counties in California:
- Between 2015 and 2030, the number of Angelenos living with Alzheimer’s will more than double. This dramatic increase will affect all races, ethnic, and cultural groups. Currently, there are 166,540 Angelenos, age 65 and older living with Alzheimer’s. By 2030, with the aging of the baby boomers, this number will increase by 40%.
- The number of Latinos and Asian and Pacific Islanders in Los Angeles living with Alzheimer’s will double by 2030.
- The number of African Americans living with Alzheimer’s will increase by over 30% in this same timeframe.
Alzheimer’s LA is committed to working to increase awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s and other dementias and to combating stigma. We connect with communities in culturally, ethnically, and linguistically competent ways that take the unique qualities of these communities into consideration. For example, in some communities, we work to combat the stigma that is associated with these diseases which can result in the loss of status in society or social group, impact family members and friends, and result in other social/psychological impacts.
Alzheimer’s LA draws its strength from our partnerships in the community. We are grateful for the many organizations who help us connect with people throughout the greater LA area and with individual communities on their terms.
Alzheimer’s Los Angeles is highly aware of the rich and vibrantly diverse nature of the large geographic area we serve, with dozens of distinct cultures and over 250 languages. We are committed to creating an environment that is open to discourse, listening, and learning from each other.
Alzheimer’s Los Angeles is the leading local, community-based organization providing programs that address the needs of people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias as well as the needs of their families and providers. We increase the health and well-being of community members through a variety programs including caregiver workshops, and community education and outreach programs.
Alzheimer’s LA is here to face Alzheimer’s together with you.
Dementia Friends is a global movement that is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. A Dementia Friend is someone who learns about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action.
Alzheimer’s Los Angeles is committed to supporting the local researchers’ efforts to understand, treat, prevent, and ultimately find a cure for Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
