Employee Protections for Alzheimer’s Family Caregivers

Supporting a family member with Alzheimer’s can be challenging—physically, emotionally, and financially. If you continue to work while caring for your family member, there are programs to help support you in your caregiving journey.

The California Paid Family Leave (PFL) program may repay part of your wages if you are an eligible employee. You may be eligible if you are covered by the State Disability Insurance program and have earned at least $300 in the past 5-18 months. You can take paid leave to care for a child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or registered domestic partner.

Additionally, the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) allows eligible employees to take up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave (per calendar year) without risk of losing their job. This program allows you to provide care for yourself, family members, or a designated person who is “like family.”

Both of these programs don’t need to be taken all at once and can be used over the course of a year.
