This year, seven staff and volunteers from Alzheimer’s Los Angeles attended the UsAgainstAlzheimer’s 2019 National Alzheimer’s Summit: Uniting Communities for a Cure and for Better Brain Health. This year’s summit was focused on promoting brain health across the lifespan, advancing equity and access to address brain health disparities, and accelerating research so we can meet the national goal of preventing and effectively treating Alzheimer’s by 2025.

We ended the summit by storming Capitol Hill, lobbying our Members of Congress on several issues:

Alzheimer’s Disease Program Initiative (ADPI)
Support the House funding increase of $4 million for the ADPI program for a total of $27.5 million. For over 25 years, the Administration on Community Living has provided grants to help states meet the needs of people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias and their caregivers. Alzheimer’s Los Angeles, as a recipient of these grant funds, has:

  • Developed the Savvy Caregiver program—an evidence-based caregiver education program that teaches family members about the disease and skills to be effective caregivers.

  • Worked with five local health care providers to improve health systems for people with dementia who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid.

  • Developed dementia care networks in the Latino, African American, and Asian Pacific Islander communities to increase disease awareness and connect people to services.

Funding for Alzheimer’s Research
Support the Senate funding increase of $350 million for a total of $2.8 billion for NIH funding for Alzheimer’s research.

The CHANGE Act of 2019
This bill helps ensure that patients are accurately diagnosed in time to plan and receive appropriate care, treatment, and access to clinical trials that may make a difference.
