Black History Month 2024
February is Black History Month
Did You Know?
Alzheimer’s impacts the Black/African American Community at a higher rate than any other community. In fact, Black/African Americans are twice as likely to have Alzheimer’s disease than Whites, yet they are less likely than other people to be diagnosed in the early stages of the disease. Once someone has Alzheimer’s, memory loss can cause many challenges. For example, some people may not remember various things about their lives such as the names of their relatives and friends, and others may not remember how to navigate familiar places like their neighborhoods which leads to the challenge of preventing them from getting lost or wandering.
Alzheimer’s Los Angeles has a “Getting Lost” Tipsheet and other resources that can help people who care for someone living with Alzheimer’s understand the importance of making sure that they are always safe. We also partner with LA County’s LA Found program which offers a system of trackable bracelets to help quickly locate people with Alzheimer’s or another dementia when they wander. To learn more, call our Helpline at 844.HELP.ALZ (844-435-7259).
Please visit our community events calendar to register for one of our workshops such as Memory Matters where we discuss Addressing Memory Concerns for African Americans, Caring for Those with Alzheimer’s: African American Voices, or our Making Home Safe workshop.
